Summer Nights

Many have put the fleeting feeling of summer into song, but the movie Grease did it best. “Summer days, driftin’ away,” the song goes, “to uh-oh those summer nights.” Weaving it’s way through a summer romance, this catchy tune perfectly captures the heat of the day and the cool of the night as Sandy and Danny give their perspectives on falling for each other, then parting when the weather takes a turn for the colder.

Oh, those summer nights. They’re only here for a short time, and they’re just made for lingering outside, aren’t they? They’re all about easy meals, cold drinks and Popsicles on the patio, and hanging out with friends until the stars have been out for hours and the kids are up way past their bedtime. There’s something about the balmy evening air that practically pushes you out of the hot house and onto a blanket on the cool grass. Add a little music or a movie and the summer night experience is complete.

You can catch outdoor movies and concerts in parks and outdoor venues all over the San Gabriel Valley starting this month, and we’ve recently added a page where you can find them all in one place. So pull out your calendars, pick your favorites and pack your picnics!

If you want a little more flexibility with your movie choices, then a backyard movie night is for you. [Read more...]

School’s Out For Summer!

Rocker Alice Cooper was once asked the question: “What’s the greatest three minutes of your life?” His answer? The moments before you open the presents on Christmas Day and the last three minutes of the last day of school. He said, “If we can catch that three minutes in a song, it’s going to be so big.”

“School’s out for Summer” became Alice Cooper’s first major hit single, rocketing his fifth album to #2 on the billboard charts and landing on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. It has also become the de-facto anthem for generations of school children, as the last bell of the school year rings and they’re set free for a long, blissful summer. [Read more...]

Be Safe & Have Fun!

When it comes to boo boos, May is a significant month. The days are longer, the weather’s warmer and we all want to be outside more. Bikes, scooters and skateboards come out of hibernation, followed by the bumps, scrapes, stings and scratches of summer. So it seems appropriate that the organization that soothes the whole country’s boo-boos, big and small, was founded on May 21, 1881. Since then, the Red Cross has given millions of Americans the opportunity to learn the basics of first aid. [Read more...]

Recycling. Saving water. Conserving energy. Reducing pollution. On the first Earth Day in 1970, most people had a hard time accomplishing even one of these things in a day. Nowadays, we do it all without batting an eyelash, while using words like “sustainable” regularly in conversation. Going green is no longer a movement, it’s a way of life, and that is worth celebrating. So put on your best organic cotton duds, grab a hemp fedora, and celebrate Earth Day in style at one of the many events happening around town this weekend. When you get home, continue the fun with some simple activities. [Read more...]

Once every couple of years, we have a winter here in Southern California that feels more like summer.  The skies stay clear and blue for days at a time and the breezes are warm.  While the rest of the country is experiencing what the Farmer’s Almanac refers to as a wet “clime and punishment” sort of winter, we’re basking in the kind of weather that just screams “get outside!” [Read more...]

St. Patrick’s Day, Even Greener

four-leaf-clover-the-orange-cat

It’s a little known fact that blue was originally the color associated with St. Patrick’s day.  It wasn’t until the 17th century that another shade took over, and it’s been all about the green ever since.  We dress in green, we dye the milk green, we raise a green toast to the luck of the Irish.  This year, why not take St. Patty’s Day to a whole new level by making the greenest holiday of the year even greener! It’s the awards season and time for family movie nights, movie trivia games for teens and don’t forget movie treats for you and the kids. Homemade pretzels are great and always have popcorn on hand.

While most of the country experiences a fairly clear-cut set of four seasons, Southern California marches to the beat of a different drummer.

Sure we’re famous for our eternal sunshine, but we all know that June comes with chilly gloom, that winter is really a balmy spring with a little rain thrown in and that you can still fry an egg on the sidewalk in October. And in a town where TV and movie ads are splashed on every billboard, where half of the neighbors work in entertainment and where most kids know the names and plotlines of the year’s nominated films, it goes without saying that our seasons are not necessarily all climate-related. We’ve also got Pilot Season, the New Fall Season and of course, [Read more...]
